Rawang, 7 December 2007
Lafarge Malayan Cement is steadfast in its commitment to improve the lives of the community in the vicinity of its Rawang plant. This premier brand in the cement industry is staying on course with its project to widen and divert a section of Sungai Rawang.
The project was officially launched via a ground breaking ceremony held on-site on the bank of Sungai Rawang and was officiated by YB Dato' Tang See Hang, EXCO Member of the Selangor State Government and State Assemblyman for Rawang.
Spearheaded in 2004, Lafarge Malayan Cement embarked on this project with the full support of the Selangor State Government amidst concerns of the recurring flash floods that have been affecting the safety of schools, community and the cement manufacturer's workers working at their quarry located within the Kuala Garing vicinity.
Sungai Rawang runs along the eastern boundary of Lafarge Malayan Cement's quarry in Rawang and the former Kampung Kuala Garing squatters were located on its western bank. The river diversion project will include diverting 2.05 km of the river westward away from Rawang Plant's quarry.
To facilitate the river diversion project, various initiatives were carried out in phases and in October 2006, Lafarge Malayan Cement announced that 124 squatter families from the affected area were relocated into proper new homes at Desa Kuala Garing, a new housing estate specially built for the squatter families. The relocation programme saw each squatter family being given ownership of an 800 square feet single storey terrace house complete with basic modern amenities. Development of the new Desa Kuala Garing housing estate was a joint effort between Lafarge Malayan Cement and the Selangor State Government.
According to Bill McDonald, the Senior Plant Manager of the company's plant in Rawang, "This ground breaking ceremony signals the commencement of the next phase of this project and we are definitely on track with it. At Lafarge Malayan Cement, everything we do reflects our commitment to foster safety and this project is a tangible example of us living up to this commitment. On this score, we hope that with this river diversion project, frequent floods that have become the bane of those who live and work in this area will become a thing of the past."
"This project would not have been possible without the backing that the Selangor State Government has provided us with and we look forward to working synergistically with the authorities to ensure the success of this project," he concluded.
Commenting on the project, YB Dato' Tang See Hang, EXCO Member of the Selangor State Government and State Assemblyman for Rawang said, "We would like to commend Lafarge Malayan Cement on taking the lead in this mammoth yet admirable task. Their contribution towards ensuring that the interest of the community in this area is safeguarded is indeed laudable and is an exemplary call to action to other entities to do their part towards sustainable nation building."
The Sungai Rawang diversion and widening project is expected to complete at the end of 2008.
