OCTOGENARIAN Wong Yun Mooi spent this Chinese New Year in a safer and more comfortable environment.

With help from Lafarge Malaysia Bhd employees, her modest wooden house in Kampung Kanthan Baru was given a fresh coat of paint in time for the festivities.

The employees of the cement manufacturer's Kanthan plant also repaired the windows and flooring of Wong's house as well as cut the grass and cleaned drains surrounding it.

To add some festive cheer, they also put up lanterns and Spring couplets around the house where Wong lived alone.

Some 30 employees took part in the gotong-royong, which was part of the company's efforts to bring festive cheer to the local residents.

Kanthan plant manager Sekar Kaliannan, who also presented hampers and angpow to over 30 families in the village later, said Lafarge had been operating in Kanthan for the past 50 years and made it a point to help the community annually.

"This year, we wanted to do more.

"With help from the Village Security and Development Committee, we decided to help Wong repair her house," he said.

Sekar said such activities not only benefited the community but also allowed the company's employees to contribute to society.

Village chief Loh Ah Kwee said the residents were appreciative of the company's kind gesture.

"We are very happy with the support Lafarge has shown to the residents here over the years," said Loh.
