Lafarge Malaysia, Felda Global Ventures and Local Agencies Test Emergency Response in Multi-Vehicle Crash

Pasir Gudang, 4 November 2014: A late morning multiple-vehicle crash along Jalan Pekeliling resulted in one fatality and sent four others to the hospital, three of whom were in critical condition.

The five vehicle collision occurred as a car tried to overtake Felda Global Ventures' (FGV) 55-tonne transporter truck carrying crude palm oil (CPO). The car's driver swerved in front of the transporter, causing the truck to plough into the car.

A Lafarge Malaysia's truck carrying pulverized fuel ash (PFA) which was behind FGV's vehicle, knocked down a motorcyclist who was travelling between the two trucks. The impact hurled the biker into a stream nearby and his bike went under the truck. A car with two passengers then crashed into Lafarge Malaysia's truck.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. Three victims were in serious condition, one sustained minor injuries while three others escaped unhurt.

The collision also resulted in the spillage of CPO and PFA, a waste product, and brought traffic on the two-lane road, to a standstill.

Local emergency responders as well as Bomba's hazardous material team and truck arrived at the scene within minutes after the distress call made by both truck drivers from Lafarge Malaysia and FGV. While the police secured the area, the firemen and rescue teams extricated all five victims who were sent to the local hospital. The spillage was also rapidly cleaned up.

Within 60 minutes after the collision, traffic resumed to normal and the curious crowd who gathered to watch the rescue operations dispersed after being informed that the crash was merely a mock drill exercise conducted by Lafarge Malaysia, FGV and 12 government agencies.

The Director General of Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya, Dato' Dr Tam Weng Wah who was present said, "I'm impressed to see how realistic the entire exercise is. By testing the systems in place, and fine-tuning them after such a drill, I am confident that every party involved today will be able to strengthen their level of preparedness to deliver timely and effective emergency response when required."

Lafarge Malaysia Vice President, Supply Chain & Strategic Sourcing, Paul Yap said, "Emergency response is a very important factor in our company's health and safety procedures. We aspire to be one of the safest organisations in Malaysia, and our goal is to have zero fatalities for our employees and contractors," adding that the company has been conducting annual mock drills with local emergency responders in different towns across Malaysia since 2010.

"This year marks another first for us as we are collaborating with FGV. We are appreciative of the support given by FGV and the government agencies who participated in the drill today," Yap also said.

FGV's Senior Vice President, Head of Transport & Logistics, Wan Mohd Zain b Wan Ismail, said, "Emergency preparedness is also a key priority in FGV, and we are delighted to work with like-minded companies such as Lafarge Malaysia as well as the government agencies to test and review our response plan, and adopt best practises."
