Lafarge and PAM Unveils "Perfect" Walkway

- Innovative solutions sponsored by Lafarge to build the 100-metre walkway
- Walkway features mural imprints by over 366 students from 19 countries

21 July 2014, Kuala Lumpur - Lafarge Malaysia Berhad ("Lafarge") and Malaysian Institute of Architects ("Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia - PAM") today opened the "ARCASIA Walk" at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur. The Director General of Kuala Lumpur City Hall, YBhg. Datuk Hj Mhd Amin Nordin Abd. Aziz, officiated the walkway which was sponsored by Lafarge using its materials and solutions. The colourful walkway feature mural imprints by 366 architectural students from 19 countries who participated in the ARCASIA Student Jamboree 2014 ("Student Jamboree") held in Kuala Lumpur from 23 to 29 June 2014.

Bradley Mulroney, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge said, "We chose to rebuild this 100-metre walkway at Padang Merbok as it is frequently used by the public for sporting activities. We used Hydromedia, our porous concrete, which is perfect for walkways as it prevents pooling of water, making it safe and pleasant for all users."

The new walkway is built from a combination of Hydromedia, a porous concrete pavement solution which channels rain water through the pavement and hence, eliminates pooling of water at the surface making it safer for the people using the walkway, and Artevia which is a durable and low maintenance floor solution to make a beautiful walkway. Artevia comes in a variety of colours which reflects the "Colours of Harmony" theme of the Student Jamboree.

The students were in Malaysia for a week-long ARCASIA Student Jamboree 2014 which was held in conjunction with the 16th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA16) conference. The mural imprint activity was to commemorate the jamboree and it allowed the students to explore their creativity and inculcate teamwork amongst the participants.

Ar Tan Pei Ing, President of ARCASIA 2013-2014 said, "PAM and Lafarge worked together on this activity as we are committed to architectural design excellence, and this is one of the platforms to let students think out-of-the-box, to explore new canvases and materials and have fun.

"We are also appreciative of Kuala Lumpur City Hall for giving us the location and their support given during the planning of the activity," she added.

This is the second major collaboration between Lafarge and PAM. Last year, the two organisations held the inaugural PAM-Lafarge Architecture Student Competition with the aim of inspiring the future architects of tomorrow to come up with innovative and sustainable designs for affordable housing.
